The Notorious B.I.G. Life After Death Box Set Announced

The 25th anniversary deluxe reissue is out June 10

Notorious B.I.G. ‘Life After Death’

According to Pitchfork.com, The Estate of Christopher Wallace has announced a super deluxe box set of the Notorious B.I.G.’s 1997 sophomore album Life After Death, as Complex notes. It’s due out June 10 through Bad Boy, Rhino, and Atlantic Records. The box set consists of the original album and 12″ releases of “Hypnotize,” “Mo Money Mo Problems,” “Sky’s the Limit,” and “Nasty Boy.” It also includes a commemorative booklet with rare photos, liner notes by Pitchfork contributor Sheldon Pearce, and commentary from team members who worked on the original release.

The Life After Death box set is part of a larger celebration in honor of what would have been Biggie Smalls’ 50th birthday this year. The year-long campaign, titled “Sky’s the Limit: A Year Celebrating the Legacy of the Notorious B.I.G.,” will also include the release of an “enhanced digital version” of Life After Death, online events, 4k upgrades of his entire video catalog on YouTube, and “additional surprises.”

In 2020, the Notorious B.I.G. was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by Diddy. The late rapper was honored by Jay-Z, Nas, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and his family for the occasion. Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell, a documentary about the Notorious B.I.G.’s early life and ascendance to rap superstardom, hit Netflix last spring.

Both Gunmen Wanted for Young Dolph’s Murder Arrested

Both Gunmen Wanted for Young Dolph’s Murder Arrested

Young Dolph

The two gunmen wanted for the murder of Young Dolph are now reportedly in police custody.

Memphis’ Action News 5 reports that earlier this afternoon (Jan. 11), 23-year-old suspected gunman Justin Johnson, a.k.a. rapper Straight Dropp, was captured by U.S. Marshals in Indiana. The second individual, Cornelius Smith, 32, was already in custody at Desoto County Jail in Desoto, Miss. for a previous arrest from Dec. 9.

You can see mugshots of both Justin Johnson and Cornelius Smith from Fox 13 Memphis reporter Jeremy Pierre at the bottom of this post.

Smith was initially apprehended last month on an auto-theft warrant involving the white Mercedes-Benz that was reportedly used as the getaway car in Dolph’s murder.

The car was initially stolen from a gas station on the 2800 block of Kirby Road on Nov. 10, seven days before Dolph was gunned down. That same vehicle was found and towed away 10 days later, on Nov. 20, from behind a home on the 1100 block of Bradley Street in the Orange Mound section of Memphis.

Smith, who was indicted on Tuesday (Jan. 10), was transferred from Desoto County Jail in Desoto, Miss. to Shelby County Jail in Memphis. Both Johnson and Smith have been charged with first-degree murder, according to Memphis’ Fox 13. Johnson has additional charges of theft of property between $10,000 and $60,000 and outstanding warrant for violation of federal release related to a weapons conviction while Smith has additional charges of attempted first-degree murder, unlawfully carrying or possessing a weapon, employment of a firearm with intent to commit a felony and theft of property between $10,000 and $60,000.

The arrests come just a week after police had released a fugitive alert that Johnson was wanted for the alleged murder of Dolph. People with any information on his whereabouts were encouraged to notify law enforcement. Any information that led to his arrest would be rewarded with up to $15,000 from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in partnership with the U.S. Marshals, the Memphis Police Department and Crime Stoppers.

On Saturday (Jan. 8), Johnson announced via his personal Instagram page that he would be turning himself in to authorities on Monday, Jan. 10, and that he was innocent. Instead, however, he dropped a new song titled “Track Hawk” and remained on the run.

XXL has reached out to a rep for Young Dolph, the Memphis Police Department, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office and a rep for the U.S. Marshals for comment on this matter.

Jay-Z says Frank Ocean “has some of the best music that we’ve ever heard”

Ocean has reportedly been “shopping” his next album to various labels

Jay-Z and Frank Ocean at the Grammys

Jay-Z has declared his appreciation for the unique artistry of Frank Ocean, saying the R&B trailblazer has crafted “some of the best music that we’ve ever heard”.

The comment came during Jay’s appearance in a Twitter Space hosted by Alicia Keys earlier this week (the singer was there to promote her recent eighth album, ‘KEYS’), where he also compared Beyoncé to Michael Jackson, and said there was “not a chance in hell” that someone could take him on in a VERZUZ battle.

“You know, the success has to be like Frank Ocean,” Jay said in the Space. “Now obviously, you know, he’s super popular, but I wouldn’t say that he’s playing by what were the industry rules. He’s playing by his own set of rules – he’s making music that he wants to make, and it doesn’t fit a format.

“He doesn’t have songs on there that fit pop radio or that make it [to] a billion streams; he just has music that’s better than everyone else. And that’s what has to be the goal going forwards. And I don’t want to say [he’s] better than everyone in terms of competing with music, I’m just saying, like he has some of the best music that we’ve ever heard.”

Keys echoed the praise for Ocean, vouching that he “lives in his world and goes and creates what he loves”, and that it’s clear he’s not “playing by anybody else’s rules”.
