Celebrate Juneteenth

Happy #Juneteenth 🙌

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.  Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

Juneteenth In Modern Times

Today, Juneteenth is enjoying a phenomenal growth rate within communities and organizations throughout the country. Institutions such as the Smithsonian, the Henry Ford Museum and others have begun sponsoring Juneteenth-centered activities. In recent years, a number of local and national Juneteenth organizations have arisen to take their place along side older organizations – all with the mission to promote and cultivate knowledge and appreciation of African American history and culture.

Juneteenth today, celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouragingcontinuous self-development and respect for all cultures. As it takes on a more national, symbolic and even global perspective, the events of 1865 in Texas are not forgotten, for all of the roots tie back to this fertile soil from which a national day of pride is growing.

The future of Juneteenth looks bright as the number of cities and states creating Juneteenth committees continues to increase. Respect and appreciation for all of our differences grow out of exposure and working together. Getting involved and supporting Juneteenth celebrations creates new bonds of friendship and understanding among us. This indeed, brightens our future – and that is the Spirit of Juneteenth.

The Beautiful actress, Tika Sumpter Reveals Her Child’s Father In Heartfelt Instagram Post.
The star, who has been notoriously private about his identity, finally let the world know about her love.
After a year of being coy, Tika Sumpter shared a Father’s Day photo of daughter Ella-Loren and Nick James, the actor who’s the father of her bundle of joy.

And it’s safe to say the two make a beautiful pair.

In January, Sumpter revealed on The Real that she was engaged to James, who popped the question on Christmas— but never said his name. “I didn’t want to hear, ‘Who’s the dad?’” Sumpter said about remaining private about his identity. “Social media can be harsh, and I’m a mama bear, protective of my family. So that’s why I waited to tell people, including some of my friends.” Sumpter and James met on the set of Tyler Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots series. No word on when the wedding will happen, but we can’t wait for the fab photos.

As the reports are beginning to vilify this woman, let’s state facts. She is a mother of 3 (one child has special needs) who realized that her apartment had been robbed. As any mother would do to protect her children, she armed herself with a knife. The police that she called, shot her in front of her children stating that that she was a threat with a knife. What happened to all of that training? There has to be more put into place to protect normal citizens and for the police officers to remember their training. She did not deserve to die. #CharleenaLyles #BlackLivesMatter

****BREAKING NEWS****

#Team216TheBeatNews …
Prodigy of Mobb Deep has died at age 42. A publicist for the group confirmed to XXL that he was found unconscious this morning and has passed away.

Mobb’s publicist sent XXL the following statement: “It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.” For his entire career, Prodigy was a master wordsmith, handling the lyrical heft for Mobb Deep while Havoc paved the way as one of New York’s premier producers. Now we will forever mourn the loss of one of the greatest rappers of all time.

We send our condolences to P’s family, friends and colleagues.

Beyonce x Coachella Announces 2018 Festival Dates

beyonce-ivy-park

Beyoncé officially has her first tour dates for 2018 set: Coachella just announced its festival dates for next year. The two-weekend music and arts festival will take place from Friday, April 13, through Sunday, April 15, and Friday April 20 through Sunday, April 22, respectively.

The “Formation” singer was originally a 2017 Coachella headliner, but after announcing that she’s pregnant with twins in February, she had to cancel her appearance (despite delivering a show-stopping performance at the Grammys). To make up for her unexpected cancellation, Beyoncé signed on as a headliner for 2018.

Because of Beyoncé’s move, fans who plan to attend next year’s fest already know one headliner they’ll get to see, which isn’t typically the case with Coachella. Even with lineups being announced long after tickets go on sale, passes sell out at a rapid pace — so with someone like Queen B confirmed for the bill, better act fast if you want to be there.

Advance tickets for Coachella 2018 will be available starting June 2 at 11 a.m. PT.
