Jay-Z Dedicates Song to Colin Kaepernick During New York City Concert

TIM DANIELS
Jay-Z dedicated “The Story of O.J.” to former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick during his performance Friday at the Meadows Music and Arts Festival in New York City.

ESPN.com noted the famed rapper shouted out Kaepernick before singing the song—which is about “blackness and managing money” and includes a reference to former NFL running back O.J. Simpson—at Citi Field, the home of the New York Mets, in Queens.

“I want to dedicate this song to Colin Kaepernick tonight,” Jay-Z said.

Kaepernick has remained a free agent since he opted out of his contract with the Niners in March. Many of his fellow players, including outspoken Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, have said he’s being “blackballed” for his protest during national anthems last season.

The 29-year-old Milwaukee native drew widespread attention for this decision to kneel, though he was later joined by athletes from across the sports spectrum. He explained his stance to Steve Wyche of NFL.com in August 2016.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick said. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell downplayed the idea teams weren’t treating the quarterback fairly during an appearance at New York Jets training camp in July.

“Those are independent decisions that clubs make,” he told reporters. “Clubs are going to do what they think is in the best interest of their franchise and what it is that they can do to win.”

Kaepernick accounted for 18 touchdowns and seven turnovers across 12 appearances, including 11 starts, with the 49ers last season. Kyle Wagner of FiveThirtyEight wrote last month “it’s obvious Kaepernick is being frozen out for his political opinions, but it’s less apparent how extraordinary it is that a player like him can’t find a team.”

Meanwhile, the QB has continued with his $1 million pledge, which is aimed toward supporting “organizations working in oppressed communities.”

Jamie Foxx doesn’t want to meet Jay-Z!

IMG_20170917_123251_595.jpg

.
It’s hard to believe, but Jamie Foxx hasn’t met Jay-Z — and in fact, the Oscar winner doesn’t want to.
.
Foxx, 49, told People magazine that he’s “a little in awe of Jay-Z.”
.
And although the two shared a table at Rihanna’s Diamond Ball, which was held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York earlier this week, the two celebrities didn’t exchange pleasantries.
.
“I like to keep that mystique of him. I don’t ever want to be too close,” the actor and comedian explained. “I keep Jay-Z on a certain level.”
.
Foxx said his image of the rapper is also close to his heart because he bonded with his father, Darrell Bishop, while watching Beyonce’s husband perform. The comedian has spoken openly about his estranged relationships with his parents, having been adopted and raised by his grandparents.
.
“I took my father to see Jay-Z, not too long after 9/11… this was our first moment of bonding, and I was like, ‘I’m gonna take you see somebody, pops.’ And we watched that guy, and we had a great moment,” he recalled.

The White House demands firing of ESPN’s Jemele Hill

#Twittter was all a buzz yesterday when the #WhiteHouse demanded that #ESPN fire @jemelehill over her tweets about #DonaldTrump

White House: ESPN anchor that called Trump racist should be fired
.
An ESPN anchor who called President Trump a white supremacist should be fired, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Wednesday. “That is one of the more outrageous comments that anybody could make and certainly is something that is a fireable offense by ESPN,” Sanders said.

ESPN has reprimanded Jemele Hill, an African-American woman who co-hosts a show called “SC6 with Michael and Jemele,” for a string of tweets sent out over the weekend calling Trump and his supporters white supremacists.

Sanders on Tuesday defended Trump, saying that he had met recently with Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), who is black, and other “highly respected leaders in the African-American community” and that he is “committed to working with them to bring the country together.” “That’s where we need to be focused, not on outrageous statements like this one,” Sanders said.

Remembering Hip-Hop Icon Tupac Shakur, 21 Years Later

On the 21st anniversary of Tupac Shakur’s shocking death on September 13th, the still unsolved murder of the 25-year-old rapper continues to resonate.
.
Hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur often rapped about themes of death in songs such as “How Long Will They Mourn Me?”, “God Bless the Dead” and “To Live and Die in L.A.” In an eerie example of life imitating art, the music video Shakur did for “I Ain’t Mad at Cha,” which was completed just weeks before his death, shows him being gunned down and rapping from heaven.
.
The Tragedy in Las Vegas
.
After attending a Mike Tyson/Bruce Seldon title fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, Tupac and Suge Knight, the founder of Death Row Records, started driving to a party at Club 662 around 11:15 p.m. While they were stopped at a red light, someone in a white Cadillac pulled up next to their black BMW and fired 14 shots at them. Four bullets hit Shakur, who was in the passenger’s seat. One bullet punctured his right lung; he lost consciousness at the scene and never woke again.
.
Six days later, on Friday, September 13, 1996, his mother, Afeni Shakur, made the painful decision to take him off the life support system in the intensive care unit of the University Medical Center in Las Vegas. He was only 25 years old.
.
His murder has yet to be solved. A recent statement from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reads, “The case is still open and under investigation. At this time, we have no additional updates to provide.”
.
Lack of official facts has only fueled the numerous rumors and rampant speculation surrounding Shakur and deepened his mystique. As popular and controversial a figure he was in life, he has become even more so after his death. In fact, at this point, Shakur has sold more music posthumously than he did when he was alive.

Who vandalized Prince tribute?

If you’re from Cleveland you’re aware of our ‘Supreme’ store better known as, ilthy.

Glen Infante has silently contributed to the Culture for the past 10 plus years. You’ve seen and admired his work and have no idea who he is.

The famous brightly colored paintings, T’s and murals of celebrities eating sprinkle covered donuts. Cavaliers T-Shirts with the team pictured as caricatures. The infamous easter egg colored depiction of Jesus. Countless in-store events and cool ass marketing photos and videos.

If you’ve attended a Cavaliers game, driven past the arena or driven around Cleveland…particularly the Westside, you’ve more than likely have seen his work. Glen has been procured several times to beauty the grey Cleveland landscape with his awesome murals.

One of those murals being a tribute to Prince. It was recently vandalized. Nonetheless, Glen’s loyalty to his city and dedication to his work had him repainting the defacement for hours.

Thanks Glen for your contributions to the Culture of our city!
