NEW MUSIC: DEF-I FT. JOSH DOMINGUEZ – WOKE UP LATE (REMIX)

Hard on the heels of the first single from their revamped album, Oceans Deserted – The Remixes, beloved New Mexico MC Def-i and respected SoCal producer and artist Ariano drop their latest joint, “Woke Up Late.”

DEF-I

“Woke Up Late” is a re-conceptualized version of the track from the original album. It’s a different vibe for Def-i, unlike any sound fans have heard from him before. His effortless flow and innately creative rhymes are still on deck, but there’s a moodier feel that’s downright sexy. Def-i’s delivery combined with the sultry rasp of LA’s Josh Dominguez on the hook creates an entirely seductive sound. Ariano’s production is a clean overhaul of the original track; leaning more towards bass-heavy rock and less traditional hip hop.

“Woke Up Late” is the second single from Oceans Deserted – The Remixes, and dropped May 8th on Popular Nobody.

NEW VIDEO: DEF-I FT. ARIANO – AMERICAN QUARANTINE

Following the success of his recent album, Deserted Oceans, iconic New Mexico artist Def-i and veteran SoCal producer and artist Ariano flip the script and prepare to drop a revamped version of the album, bringing you Oceans Deserted – The Remixes.

The remix album reimagines all of the original tracks and throws fans a new joint born from these uncertain times, “American Quarantine.” Recorded by Ariano in LA, “American Quarantine” is guitar-driven and heavy, mirroring the mood of the times. Def-i delivers his verses with spit-fire precision, his message on point and addressing the fear and fallout from the global pandemic. Even in his direct references, Def-i expertly weaves subtle hidden meaning into every verse, grounding the track in an unwavering veil of hope.

The accompanying video to “American Quarantine” brings the words of Def-i and Ariano to life. Directed by The Mothership Alumni, the imagery is powerfully pointed in scanning the eerie emptiness of city streets and the places that should be swarming with life. The loneliness of the cityscape is juxtaposed against the calming solitude of the New Mexico desert, which Def-i embraces even in the midst of the chaos.

“American Quarantine” is a song of the now and is the first single from Oceans Deserted – The Remixes, dropping May 8th on Popular Nobody.

VIDEO: DEF-I – PEARLS

Following the release of his highly acclaimed new EP, Deserted Oceans, iconic New Mexico artist, Def-i, drops the video for his second single, “Pearls.”

“Pearls” showcases the depth of Def-i’s skills on the mic; his lyrics are purposeful and his wordplay is nuanced. Veteran SoCal artist Ariano’s production is a knocking blend of jazzy and spiritual undertones.

The video for “Pearls” mimics Def-i’s music…it’s clean, deceptively complex and stands on its own without being held up by distracting fillers. The imagery focuses solely on Def-i, switching from the pristine backdrop of the desert juxtaposed against the grit and garbage of back alleys.

A Thicity production, “Pearls” is the first video dropped from Deserted Oceans.

Continuing 2019’s Dream Trails magic, Def-i teams up once again with veteran SoCal producer and artist Ariano on Deserted Oceans. Titled after a clever twist on where each artist hails from (Def-i from the deserts of New Mexico, Ariano from the beaches of the West Coast), the album is an elevated version of the artistry fans have come to expect from Def-i.

Deserted Oceans showcases Def-i in his prime – His lyrics are purposeful, and his wordplay nuanced, laden with intelligent metaphors and double entendre. His MC stylings are multi-faceted, flowing effortlessly from rapid-fire bars to a slowed-down cadence. His message speaks naked truth to power, underpinned with hope and positivity.

The production on the album is moody, raw and heavy with bass. Ariano manages to underscore his hard-hitting production with an ethereal quality that lays a solid foundation for Def-i to – as Ariano puts it – “rap his ass off.”

Deserted Oceans brings together coast-to-coast talent, with features from Atlanta rapper T.R.3 and visuals from Memphis-based visual artist, Nosey42, from New Mexico-based violinist Sage Cornelius and poet, writer and artist Tanaya Winder, to West Coast artists Ami Kim, Josh Dominguez, DJ LDontheCut, and of course, Ariano.
