Both Gunmen Wanted for Young Dolphâs Murder Arrested

The two gunmen wanted for the murder of Young Dolph are now reportedly in police custody.
Memphis’ Action News 5 reports that earlier this afternoon (Jan. 11), 23-year-old suspected gunman Justin Johnson, a.k.a. rapper Straight Dropp, was captured by U.S. Marshals in Indiana. The second individual, Cornelius Smith, 32, was already in custody at Desoto County Jail in Desoto, Miss. for a previous arrest from Dec. 9.
You can see mugshots of both Justin Johnson and Cornelius Smith from Fox 13 Memphis reporter Jeremy Pierre at the bottom of this post.
Smith was initially apprehended last month on an auto-theft warrant involving the white Mercedes-Benz that was reportedly used as the getaway car in Dolphâs murder.
The car was initially stolen from a gas station on the 2800 block of Kirby Road on Nov. 10, seven days before Dolph was gunned down. That same vehicle was found and towed away 10 days later, on Nov. 20, from behind a home on the 1100 block of Bradley Street in the Orange Mound section of Memphis.
Smith, who was indicted on Tuesday (Jan. 10), was transferred from Desoto County Jail in Desoto, Miss. to Shelby County Jail in Memphis. Both Johnson and Smith have been charged with first-degree murder, according to Memphis’ Fox 13. Johnson has additional charges of theft of property between $10,000 and $60,000 and outstanding warrant for violation of federal release related to a weapons conviction while Smith has additional charges of attempted first-degree murder, unlawfully carrying or possessing a weapon, employment of a firearm with intent to commit a felony and theft of property between $10,000 and $60,000.
The arrests come just a week after police had released a fugitive alert that Johnson was wanted for the alleged murder of Dolph. People with any information on his whereabouts were encouraged to notify law enforcement. Any information that led to his arrest would be rewarded with up to $15,000 from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in partnership with the U.S. Marshals, the Memphis Police Department and Crime Stoppers.
On Saturday (Jan. 8), Johnson announced via his personal Instagram page that he would be turning himself in to authorities on Monday, Jan. 10, and that he was innocent. Instead, however, he dropped a new song titled “Track Hawk” and remained on the run.
XXL has reached out to a rep for Young Dolph, the Memphis Police Department, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office and a rep for the U.S. Marshals for comment on this matter.

Certified Hitz Music Group and DJ Bad Tha Problem bust into the new year with ‘Turn Up Music [EDM Edition] Volume 13’ Mixtape, out now on digital platforms. Delivered in true “Problem” manner, the project hits hard with invigorating blends of EDM and Hip Hop. Listeners are sure to turn the volume all the way up and press repeat. Check out the full interview below with DJ Bad Tha Problem and connect on all Social Media platforms.
MJ:  Before we jump into your new mixtape âTurn Up Music [EDM Edition] Vol. 13â, tell us what itâs like being a DJ in one of the hottest cities in the country? I know thereâs nothing like home base, but do you have other favorite hot spots you DJ at?
DJ Bad Tha Problem: Being a DJ in Florida is a lot of fun compared to being a DJ in my home state NJ. I have had offers to DJ at a few clubs around my city but turned those down to focus on making mixtapes, working with my two artists, building brands and networking, etc.
MJ: âTurn Up Music [EDM Edition] Vol. 13â, what can listeners and fans expect from this mixtape? This is volume 13, shed some light on how you keep fans coming back for more.
DJ Bad Tha Problem: Fans and listeners can expect a lot of certified hitz from âTurn Up Music [EDM Edition] Vol. 13â. It is not just your typical EDM tape. If youâre a fan of EDM and Hip Hop, youâll be getting the best of both worlds, not just on this volume but in the whole âTurn Up Music [EDM Edition]â mixtape series. This mixtape series has by far been the most successful series Iâve ever put together. I have been overwhelmed by the numbers and the support behind this mixtape series. Shout out to all the people who have listened and downloaded any of the previous volumes and shout out to the bootleggers too. I am currently working on the next volume which I should be releasing sometime in 2022 probably in late January or early February.
MJ: Your next show is on January 8th at Karma Sutra Lounge in NYC, please share all that 411!
DJ Bad Tha Problem: January 8th is going to be a spectacular certified event. Me and my artist City The Great will be holding a mixtape/album release party not just for our project âRespectfully Yoursâ, but for my artist debut album âThe Wordsmithâ under the legendary Special Edâs label SEMedia. The event will be held at the Karma Sutra Lounge in NYC, from 7 pm to 2 am. Expect live performances from City The Great and the artists under Certified Nation Ent, great food and drinks, and nothing but good music. DJ Buena Vida and I will be on the 1âs and 2âs. We will be having some surprise celebrity guests at the event. I cannot disclose who will be in attendance, however, If you want to find out you will have to be there for yourselfâŚfree entry! I mean who doesnât like free stuff, am I right? Plus, we will be celebrating my artistâs birthday.
MJ: You donât only wear the hat as DJ and CEO, but youâre also a producer and A&R. Itâs not uncommon for us to play various roles in the music industry, do you favor one role more than the other? Does one present more challenges than the others?
DJ Bad Tha Problem: I personally donât favor one role over the other. I enjoy all the roles I play equally. The only role that presents more of a challenge for me is being a producer. The challenge that I have is sitting down and taking time to make my own music from scratch. I have dabbled with making beats for a while now, even gotten my first placement with an indie artist I was working with at the time but havenât really taken it seriously. I plan on changing that next year. Iâve helped produce other artistâs projects in the past even helped produce some of the tracks on City The Greatâs upcoming mixtape âRespectfully Yoursâ. And no, Iâm not talking about strictly just making beats. There is a big difference between being a beatmaker and a producer. However, I am not just a DJ, CEO, Producer, and A&R. I do pretty much everything by myself and have been for a very long time. From videos, audio engineering, promoting, building websites, etc., I used to do graphics too but not anymore. I have a main graphic designer now. Shout out to MefDesigns. Doing everything by myself can be challenging, tiring, and sometimes stressful but I love music. I donât have the time to wait on anyone.
MJ: Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
DJ Bad Tha Problem: Expect a lot more mixtape projects from me next year and be on the lookout for City The Greatâs mixtape titled âRespectfully Yoursâ hosted by yours truly, dropping January 8th on all streaming platformsâŚTurn Up Music [EDM Edition] Vol. 14 is coming real soon as well as Love & R&B Vol. 27. I have a new mixtape series in the works, I am still working out all the details, and I will be bringing back the mixtape series âDefinition Of A Hustlerâ featuring a lot of dope independent artists, so stay tuned and be on the lookout for that!

Ocean has reportedly been âshoppingâ his next album to various labels

Jay-Z has declared his appreciation for the unique artistry of Frank Ocean, saying the R&B trailblazer has crafted âsome of the best music that weâve ever heardâ.
The comment came during Jayâs appearance in a Twitter Space hosted by Alicia Keys earlier this week (the singer was there to promote her recent eighth album, âKEYSâ), where he also compared BeyoncĂŠ to Michael Jackson, and said there was ânot a chance in hellâ that someone could take him on in a VERZUZ battle.
âYou know, the success has to be like Frank Ocean,â Jay said in the Space. âNow obviously, you know, heâs super popular, but I wouldnât say that heâs playing by what were the industry rules. Heâs playing by his own set of rules â heâs making music that he wants to make, and it doesnât fit a format.
âHe doesnât have songs on there that fit pop radio or that make it [to] a billion streams; he just has music thatâs better than everyone else. And thatâs what has to be the goal going forwards. And I donât want to say [heâs] better than everyone in terms of competing with music, Iâm just saying, like he has some of the best music that weâve ever heard.â
Keys echoed the praise for Ocean, vouching that he âlives in his world and goes and creates what he lovesâ, and that itâs clear heâs not âplaying by anybody elseâs rulesâ.
