Yung Gypsy Shows Off Unmatched Edginess In “B.M.S.” (Video & Interview)

Yung Gypsy, representing Philly, presents the FranchiseBeats/Rotation Records produced single/video “B.M.S.” Gypsy wastes no time conveying who she is, what she wants, and how she moves by way of slick bars, boldly delivered. She exudes infectious doses of sass and confidence that weave in and out of her raw message. Audiences are sure to grip onto her unmatched edginess, as they hit repeat. Watch the video and tap in below for more on “B.M.S.,” an industry takeover, what’s next, and more.

MJ: Before we jump into your new single/video “B.M.S.” let everyone know who you are and where you’re from.

Yung Gypsy: I’m a Tri-State Gypsy from the Tri-State area. Born in South New Jersey, living in and out of Brooklyn NY. Raised in PA. I never stay anywhere long enough for the roots to stick. It’s a lifestyle. One of a Nomadic Traveling Artist.

MJ: At what point in your life did you decide it was time to kick start your career? Walk us through a brief timeline.

Yung Gypsy: Honestly it just kind of happened! I came to Reading PA to meet up with my boy Frank (shout out to FranchiseBeats) we were catching up and going through some of his music catalogs (this man is a genius). Now we ran through quite a few songs he produced but there was one he left in the tuck (untouched) he wanted me to hear. He took a sample from one of my favorite movies and as soon as I heard the track, I knew it was time.

MJ: Holding it down in a male-dominated industry, tell us what sets you apart from other artists, from looks to style, to craft, etc.

Yung Gypsy: So first off… I feel like the ladies are taking over! The men pull the strings behind the scenes, but the women run the show… I’m such a free spirit and a very spiritual being at that and I like to exude and integrate that power and belief into my craft and all of my passions. I throw in originality with a hint of the many inspirations that came before me in many different genres to give tribute and pay homage. Music is ever evolving, and I want to portray an image that doesn’t put me in a box.

MJ: Let’s dive into your new single/video “B.M.S.” A few impressions fall into play while watching the video…bold, sexy, and confident. What was the push behind the record? What are you hoping fans and new listeners/audiences will take from it?

Yung Gypsy: So, when I listen to a track I try not to approach it with a ready-made theme. Although, in times where I might need to get some things off my chest or I feel like I need to release a ball of creative energy, I’ll sit and write cappella but when it comes to an original beat, I feel like I have to bring to its original sound. I never know what’s about to come to my head. I like to just let my mind wander on the beat. So, when it came to “B.M.S” I did just that and like you said it’s giving Bold! It’s giving Audacity! It’s giving I’m here and there’s nothing you can do about it

MJ: What other projects or endeavors are you working on?

Yung Gypsy: I have a few things in the tuck right now that I’m really excited about. I always wanted to co-produce original beats and I had the privilege to accomplish that with these next few track releases. I like the melodic, so you’ll get a taste of that alongside some raw lyrics. You’ll hear classic sounds from the 80’s to the early 2000’s My favs.

MJ: Is there anything else you would like to share with the world about Yung Gypsy?

Yung Gypsy: For those who do not know me I’ve been writing & recording music since I was 15 years old, so this is nothing new to me but definitely something true to me. Shout Out to “Rotation Records” on this up-and-coming project and Look Out for My New Single “Tell Nobody” ft. Jess Cannzie (End of May 2024).

D Prime 215 “What They Tell Us” Video

Philly’s own prolific emcee, D Prime 215 delivers more mind-blowing realities in his latest video “What They Tell Us.” The single/video, produced by Johann Sebastian, is off Prime’s latest “Sacred Mantra” EP, available on all major platforms.

“Mass media controls how many people get their news. The issue is, it’s not always accurate or close to it. When it comes to Black Folk, accurate isn’t even a thought most of the time. Negative statistics and stereotypes permeate the media as the overpowering narrative. This one-sided narrative is viewed as Gospel by those who don’t come in to contact with Black Folk on a regular basis if at all. As a Black Man, being viewed as the sum of negativity is asinine to me, as if that’s ALL we are. This record is my 2 Cents on it. I present to you “What They Tell Us.” Press Play.” – D Prime 215

The video is a simple one, just D Prime walking through his city of brotherly love. Because of his intricate wordplay and ingenious lyricism, there’s no need for gimmicks to entice viewers in. Also, a mini-film or animation, etc., would just take away from Prime’s lyrical declaration.

Prime addresses stereotypes placed on African Americans repeatedly for centuries. He also claims his human stance, free of felonies and other negative connotations. He goes on to mention that deliberately damaging advancements for African Americans must come to an end.  It makes you raise an eyebrow and wonder if others were just born jealous.  Prime delivers his revolutionary rhymes over chilling, hair-raising production blended with classic cuts and scratches. Watch “What They Tell Us” and connect with D Prime 215 and Johann Sebastian below.

About D Prime 215

In the English language, the word “Prime” is defined as “of first importance”. One could certainly say that Philadelphian emcee D Prime 215 has christened himself appropriately, as hip-hop has been of first importance in this young man’s life since he picked up a pad and pen in 2009. You can hear the warm, “golden era” sounds of J Dilla, A Tribe Called Quest and hometown heroes The Roots pulsing through his music, but with an updated, current twist. Prime’s held his own on wax with underground veterans like Reef the Lost Cauze, Hezekiah and Has-Lo, and shared the stage with heavyweight names such as Torae and Marco Polo. His approach is straightforward, his words honest, and his work ethic diligent. D Prime 215 is on a mission to create songs that stand the test of time, and with his unique blend of the old and the new, he’s sure to accomplish just that.

Producer Carl Madison Pays Tribute To Will Smith In “I’m Da Producer He’s Da Rapper”

Philadelphia producer Carl Madison pays tribute to West Philly’s own Hip-Hop Icon Will Smith. “I’m da Producer, He’s da Rapper” fuses Will’s classic flow and Madison’s raw and gritty approach, thus giving us a new interpretation of the Fresh Prince that the fans will appreciate and love.

I’m da Producer, He’s da Rapper by Carl Madison on Bandcamp

The nine-track project with scratches by DJ Sidewalk, elevates the essence of traditional Hip-Hop. Madison cleverly fuses soul, funk, and sounds of keys and bass to celebrate a classic album and an iconic artist.  The rendition of “Parents Just Don’t Understand, “Summertime” and “Gettin’ Funky Wit It” will have listeners reminiscent of house parties and boom-boxes vibrating on the b-ball courts.  While “Switch” will awaken the soul and lead listeners to the club banging out house music. Madison also inserts comedic skits from a few of Smith’s most popular films as well as interludes from Smith sermonizing about work ethic and excelling the craft of artistry.

Philly Duo Kohn x Steve Sxaks Drop ‘Light at the End’ LP

Philly based MC/producer duo of Kohn and Steve Sxaks return with a diverse, generational fused project titled ‘Light At The End.’  The 11-track album features Reub Boy, BellaBlu, 3T3N, Biz Mighty, Joe White, and Marrissa Joy.

Sxaks shows off his impeccably mastered production skills while Kohn delivers quick-witted wordplay, classic storytelling, and at times hits you with ‘in your face’ lyrical bombs. “Wanna Ride” offers listeners a laid-back vibe of R&B blends mixed with modern cadences. However, don’t get lost in hypnosis as “Goldar” picks up the pace with distinct striking sounds that heighten Kohn’s Trap flow. “Pay Up” is a catchy track, one that can be heard blaring anthem style. With no co-sign needed Kohn is securing bags while he levels up.

The album continues to intensify with “Shrimp Scampi.” Kohn’s zany flow and raw wordplay are magnified over a multi-genre mosh pit of fervid soundscapes. In “Replay” Kohn describes how life epitomes the redundancies of Groundhog Day but switches up yet again in “Fried Okra.” Over classic meets latter-day tones, Kohn spews authentic and animated lyricism for a throwback vibe.

“Bar Crawl” is the action-packed big screen track of the album with three minutes of raw lyrical sirens setting off a state of suspense and hair-raising chills. Once again, the mood shifts in “Palm Trees.” The sounds of striking drums serve as the heart of the track and magnify Kohn’s simple message of being ahead of the game as a heavyweight while other’s pen game is featherweight.

The duo impresses the ladies in “Pad Thai” and offers plenty of play to get them in the mood, and with a smooth soulful vibe, they don’t miss a beat. “Turn Around” is a track about constantly feeling on edge from a misled relationship. Kohn embodies the all too familiar tale through innovative storytelling.

To finalize the album, and in an attempt to spread a message near and far, from childhood to adulthood, from rich and poor, from every color in the rainbow; Kohn delivers countless gems in “Light At The End” about being true to what you believe no matter what.
