JUNE IS: BLACK MUSIC MONTH | FOXY BROWN

Ms. Cream of the Crop recalls the time she saw Foxy Brown in concert, in Cleveland, OH at The Odeon

Inga DeCarlo Fung Marchand aka Foxy Brown, is a Trinidadian-American rapper who hails from Brooklyn, NY.

After signing to Def Jam in 1996, she released her debut album, Ill Na Na, later that year on November 19, 1996. The album was certified platinum by the RIAA and has sold over 7 million copies worldwide. She was also part of the hip hop supergroup the Firm, along with NasAZ and Cormega (who was later replaced by Nature). The Firm’s solo album arrived in 1997 and was released by Dr. Dre‘s Aftermath Entertainment. In 1999, her second album Chyna Doll, debuted at the top of the Billboard 200, making her the second female rapper to top the chart after Lauryn Hill in 1998.

Her third album, Broken Silence, was released in 2001, which featured the Grammy-nominated track “Na Na Be Like.”

Cited as a fashion icon, Elle writer Janelle Harris wrote that Brown celebrated “the beauty of her mahogany skin as the self-professed ‘dark-skinned Christian Dior poster girl,’ boasted about being ‘dripped in Gabbana […] starring in billboards as big as the pride of the Black girls who saw themselves in her likeness.”

Described as one of the “illest to ever do it – regardless of gender,” Scott Glaysher of HipHopDX noted that “If those aforementioned male rappers epitomize the menacing New York City mobster of the late 90s then Foxy represents the mob wife that is even more sinister with weaponized sexuality.” He stated that “the sheer confidence and astute rhyming Foxy brought to Ill Na Na makes it one of the 90s most memorable albums and a catalyst for the fierce feminine rap wave that followed. In 2020, Spin ranked her at 20, as one of the 30 Best Female Rappers Ever.

Brown’s sophomore studio album Chyna Doll debuted at number one in 1999, making it only the second female rap album to debut at the top spot after The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998 by Lauryn Hill and eventually joined by Let There Be Eve…Ruff Ryders’ First Lady in 1999 by Eve, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded in 2012 by Nicki Minaj and Invasion of Privacy in 2018 by Cardi B. Her work has been paid homage to by numerous artists including, Nicki Minaj, Kash Doll, Megan Thee Stallion and Maliibu Miitch. Minaj has even gone so far as to say that without Foxy, she “may have never even started rapping” and that she is “the most influential female rapper.”

Foxy’s impact is undeniable, and for that, we thank her for her contributions to Hip Hop.

Rosenberg Interviews Amber Rose!

Recently, Rosenberg from one of New York City’s top urban radio station, Hot 97, gave an interview with the lovely, Amber Rose!

I can say that I truly enjoyed this interview even though it was very short, but interesting enough to hold my attention. Out of all the Amber Rose interviews I have seen I can say that her energy with Rosenberg seemed to allow her to talk more freely about certain topics from her past relationship with Kanye West.

The interview was held at her home, in her backyard I assume…sitting close to her pool but not too far from the make shift fire set up to keep them warm. Amber had a glass of red wine she was sipping on & even referenced how she had a little buzz from it.

They instantly start off talking about her relationship with rapper, Kanye West, and what happened to her after their break up. Amber stated how she never asked of anything from Kanye after the break up, even while being broke while famous. Amber stated “I had to become an entrepreneur quick…you don”t get money from that…I walk outside an its like Oh…Amber Rose! But i’m broke af!”

Amber mentioned how when everyone learned about her past life being an exotic dancer, people was not so quick to embrace the lifestyle like they did when Cardi B or even Blac Chyna became famous. She is glad to feel like she did help to break down those doors in preventing other women who like her came from the exotic dancing background.

As for her love life goals in the future, Amber stated that she did go to see a therapist questioning why she keeps attracting narcissistic sociopaths, no names were mentioned of course. Rosenberg stated that he personally feels as if her “new” relationship is more on a positive level. Amber confirmed that her “new” relationship is that! She stated that his name is Monte, who is from Flint, MI, and loves her, her son, and is just like her best friend.

Even though, Amber did not mention exactly what Monte does as a career, she totally believes in dating a man who has his own. A man who will not look to take from her, but help add to it for she helps a lot with her family. Lastly, Amber mentioned something that I swear I did not know…. she is the reason why Nicki Minaj was featured on the famous hit “Monster” by Kanye!!!! I love women who support other women….YOU GO GIRL!

Cardi B drops new single ‘Be Careful’

cardi-b-be-careful

You’ve been warned. Following “Bodak Yellow” and “Bartier Cardi,” Cardi B is putting her man on blast with her third single “Be Careful,” which seems to be inspired by her real life romance with Offset.

The Bronx rapper, who is rumored to be pregnant with fiancé Offset’s child, calls out her man over his infidelity. “I wanna get married, like the Curries, Steph and Ayesha shit,” she raps. “But we more like Belly, Tommy and Keisha shit / Gave you TLC, you wanna creep and shit / Poured out my whole heart to a piece of shit.”

Over the Vinylz, Boi-1da, and Frank Dukes production, she warns him not to mess with her heart. “It’s not a threat, it’s a warning / Be careful with me,” she raps, while borrowing lyrics from Lauryn Hill’s “Ex-Factor.”

Cardi’s highly-anticipated debut album Invasion of Privacy arrives April 6. The following day, she will perform on “SNL” and Coachella later in the month.

Offset Releases “Violation Freestyle” Video

Offset shared the video to “Violation Freestyle” which proves that Culture 2 is in the works, per Complex

King Content, who previously did the Migos “Get Right Witcha” video, is the key director for this one also!

VIOLATION FREESTYLE OUT NOW @offsetyrn 📸: @rivetingentertainment

A post shared by KING CONTENT (@oggizery_june) on

According to Complex, as of Monday, Culture 2 sessions had wrapped up and tracks have been forwarded for mixing. No mention of the track list yet, but we can assume that “Motorsport” featuring Nicki Minaj & Cardi B, and the new club single produced by Pharrell “Stir Fry” will be included on the album.

As for who will be producing the album we will have to wait patiently for that until then Quavo did deny rumors of Kanye West being a guest producer. Well, I am so proud of the Migos, they also are nominated for “Best Rap Album of The Year” catagory for the 2018 60th Grammy awards which will airing live on January 28th at 7:30pm eastern. I also had the pleasure of interviewing hot producer Cash Clay Beats in December regarding being Grammy nominated for his contribution to the album on the single “Kelly Price“.

Make sure to keep up with the station blog to watch out for Culture 2 updates!!!
